Carne Golf Links
Carne in North Mayo on the West Coast of Ireland lies in magnificent unspoiled sand dunes overlooking Blacksod Bay and the wild Atlantic Ocean near the town of Belmullet.
Eddie Hackett, the well known Irish golf links designer, was employed to lay out the 18 holes and Carne Golf Links was the last links course to be designed by him. It is now believed by many who have played it to be his greatest challenge and achievement. The first nine was opened in 1992. Play began on the second nine in 1993 and the clubhouse was completed in 1995. What is really special is that the course is laid out entirely naturally, only the greens and tees being specially constructed. The fairways were simply cut through the massive dunes with spectacular results. Equally impressive in maintaining the pure links feel of this course is that the only items above ground level are the flagsticks and it is impossible to believe that this course is not well over 100 years old.
Carne Golf Links has gone on to become one of the premium links golf courses in Ireland and is a true gem in North Mayo. Carne is true links golf and not for the faint hearted!
